Startups are not "zero budget."


Hey Reader,

A first-time founder told me recently, "We are a scrappy startup. By definition, we operate on zero budget."

I smiled.

This lie that founder can tell themselves is what keeps them small, slow, and stuck.

Bootstrap does not equal zero budget.

It means you are investing your own money. Every decision is a money decision. There is no such thing as a "zero-cost" channel.

  • Engineering costs a lot of money. It's your runway.
  • Marketing costs a lot of money. If you are doing it yourself, you are spending your most precious resource: your time.

When a founder tells me they are relying only on "free organic channels," I tell them:

That organic channel requires a massive investment of lost time:

  • Time you could have spent building a paid channel that scales.
  • Time you could have spent closing high-value deals.
  • Time you could have spent on product vision.

Time is lost money. Time is finite runway.

In 2025, by the way, organic channels also often require extra investments. It's just cheaper than paid channels.

Don't fool yourself. Every strategic choice is a financial investment, and the biggest investment you make is your own time.

If you are stuck on a "zero budget" mindset, you are treating your time as worthless. It’s not. It’s the entire business.
